No Thank You!

Shot. That is a really scary word to a little kid. I know it used to be to me! I always dreaded getting shots. I'm not so bad now because I had to have allergy shots for about 3 1/2 years. That kinda helped me to get over my fear.

Here is a joke that I found on this subject........

While I was working as a pediatric nurse, I had the difficult assignment of giving immunization shots to children. One day I entered the examining room to give four-year-old Lizzie her shot.

"NO! NO! NO!" she screamed.

"Lizzie," her mother scolded. "That's not polite behavior."

At that, the girl yelled even louder, "NO, THANK YOU! NO, THANK YOU!"

Makeovers (on the inside): They Can Be Painful!

You have finally decided to surrender everything to God. You have asked Him to make you into the godly young man or woman that He wants you to be. You know that what God is going to do with you will be great once He’s finished.

So now God starts working on you. He starts chipping away at you. Shaping you. Molding you. And maybe this shaping and molding starts hurting a little bit. You start getting worried. You start wondering what He’s doing. And now you’re not so sure if the finished you will be so great.

I really like the TV show Extreme Makeover Home Edition. (You know the show where they come and tear somebody’s house down and rebuild it bigger and better.) Well, the families that get chosen for the Home Makeover are really excited and happy. They readily give them permission to re-do their house. But once they come and start tearing down the house, you wonder if the families ever start getting worried. I mean, come on! They at least had a house even though maybe it was in bad shape. And a house is better than no house! Even though at first they realized the finished house would be great, when they start bulldozing their house you wonder if they ever start doubting whether this was such a great idea.

It’s the same when God starts working on us. He starts tearing things down, re-doing, rebuilding, and rearranging. And sometimes that gets painful. It gets uncomfortable. But one day, the work He has begun in us will be completed. And the finished us will be so much better than anything we could have ever hoped for or even imagined! Just hang in there and trust God. Because you know what? He’s trustworthy!

...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Art

[In a jokingly manner] Okay..........I have to make a confession............you might be a little bit surprised though. I..........this is just so hard! I....I....c-c-c-can't s-s-s-stand.........abstract art! There! I said it!

Apparently this lady can't either........

A tiny but dignified old lady was among a group looking at an art exhibition in a newly opened gallery. Suddenly one contemporary painting caught her eye.

The artist happened to be standing nearby. "What on earth," she inquired of him, "is that?"

He smiled condescendingly. "That, my dear lady, is supposed to be a mother and her child."

"Well then," snapped the little old lady, "why isn't it?"

Run-Away Budgie!

Does anyone know what an aviary is? Well, incase you don’t I’ll give you the definition of it courtesy of the Encarta Dictionary: [An aviary] is an enclosure or large cage where birds are kept. We have one outside and we keep cockatiels and budgies in it (we used to also have a pair of Love Bird but had to get rid of them because the female was biting the other bird’s feet). Well, yesterday…..one of the budgies flew the coop. We have been trying to lure her back to the cage but so far it hasn’t worked. So if anyone sees a blue budgie flying free, it might be ours!! (Actually it is my brother's.)

I gave our dog a bath today. He sure doesn’t like that! He especially doesn’t like it when I have to rinse the soap of his head! I took some pictures of him awhile ago and so hopefully someday I’ll be able to sit down and write a post all about Buster (that’s our dog’s name).

$7 Haircuts

I just got my hair cut today. I'm so glad that the guy who cuts it is good at his job.......

A new hair salon opened up for business right across the street from the old established hair cutters' place. They put up a big bold sign which read:

"WE GIVE SEVEN DOLLAR HAIR CUTS!"

Not to be outdone, the old Master Barber put up his own sign:

"WE FIX SEVEN DOLLAR HAIR CUTS"

Made In His Image 2

Read Made In His Image by clicking here.

My mom and I are reading Shirley by Charlotte Bronte right now. And we read a part the other day that is truly beautiful. It is another reminder that God looks at the heart not the outward appearance.

"May God long preserve to you the blessings of peace and innocence! By which phrase, I mean comparative innocence; for in His sight, I am well aware, none are pure. What, to our human perceptions, looks spotless as we fancy angels, is to Him but frailty, needing the blood of His Son to cleanse, and the strength of His Spirit to sustain. Let us each and all cherish humility—I, as you, my young friends; and we may well do it when we look into our own hearts, and see there temptations, inconsistencies, propensities, even we blush to recognize. And it is not youth, nor good looks, nor grace, nor any gentle outside charm which makes either beauty or goodness in God’s eyes. Young ladies, when your mirror or men’s tongues flatter you, remember that, in the sight of her Maker, Mary Anne Ainley—a woman whom neither glass nor lips have ever panegyrized [which means praised]—is fairer and better than either of you. She is indeed,” he added, after a pause—“she is indeed. You young things—wrapt up in your selves and in earthly hopes—scarcely live as Christ lived: perhaps you cannot do it yet, while existence is so sweet and earth so smiling to you; it would be too much to expect: she, with meek heart and due reverence, treads close to her Redeemer’s steps.”

Keepin' on keepin' on. Not always easy.

This post is mainly for those of us in school…..

Aaaaaaaaaaaah……summer break is almost here!!! But it’s not here yet……..and I don’t know about you but I’m ready for a break. My school has been very demanding this year. Especially since I got a late start on it. (It would take a little bit of explaining why I started school late, so I won’t bother you with it…..for now at least!)

School takes a lot of, can you guess what? It takes perseverance. It takes discipline. And those are things that I find hard sometimes, okay a lot of the time. Some days I have to really push myself to get my school done. I would rather be playing the piano or blogging etc. But I know one day my hard work will pay off. All these hours I’ve spent studying will be worth it. Why? I really want to go to college and get a pharmacy degree. I’ve always loved the medical field. And I have narrowed it down to the field of pharmacy. Getting to that goal isn’t easy though. And I’ve really figured that out since I’ve began highschool. I’ve seen real quick that it is going to take a lot of perseverance and discipline (and of course I need God’s help!).

Here is some encouragement for you as you study:

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! So this means if you fail 10th grade, try, try again! (Hopefully that won’t happen!)

Here is some real encouragement:

It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.

Our Pranks.......

Once upon a time....um....never mind. That is so.....over used.

Anyway, my brother and I pulled some pranks on April Fools. It was a lot of fun!

Our Pranks:

(1.) We took hard boiled eggs and switched them with the raw eggs in the refrigerator. This turned out really well!!

(2.) My brother taped my dad's computer mouse to the side of a cabinet. (The computer mouse it cordless.) Instead of tricking anyone this one just looked kind of odd.

(3.) I took tape and rolled it and taped my dad's shoes to the floor. He didn't find this out until April the 2. So it was a day late, but oh well.

(4.) We switched the pictures around on the walls.

(5.) We switched the sweetened tea with a mixture of water, food coloring, and unsweetened tea. (We had to do that to give it the tea color)

(6.) We took two doors off the hinges and hid them. My dad noticed it I believe right away. But it took my mom awhile to figure it out!

(7.) etc.

Now you might be asking, "Yeah that's great but didn't you get in trouble?" Well, my parents were fine with these jokes as long as we put things back where they went. Like, for instance, the pictures. And as long as we didn't hurt anything. Like, for example, dropping the doors and breaking something.

The door joke was kinda a joke on us though. The one door was not too heavy so it was pretty easy to get back on the hinges. But then the other door which is a wooden (oak) door took a few tries. But everything went fine and we had some good laughs.

My dad did get us back. Lets just say that he hid a few of our things. Like Nathan's PlayStation 2 and my GameCube etc.....!

Waiting for the Wedding

Hannah Beth over at Beauty from the Heart wrote an awesome post! I loved it! I really recommend going over and reading it. Here is a sample:

Imagine that you are engaged to be married. You have met and fallen in love with the one who God has planned you for all along. You can hardly wait for the wedding day, but you have one problem. Your groom promised to bring the entire wedding party to your doorstep, but following old Jewish tradition, has refused to tell you the wedding date. It is a secret posessed only by him and his father. Every morning you wake up and question yourself, 'Is this the day of my marriage?' Each day you must prepare as though the wedding were just about to take place.

This may seem like a surreal situation, but it was reality for Jewish women during the time of Christ. After the initial betrothal, about twelve months would pass. Toward the end of the twelve months or soon after, the groom would arrive at the bride's home with the wedding party and the marriage ceremony could begin. The bride was never sure of the exact time that her husband-to-be was coming; she only knew that it was soon.

Be sure to read the rest of this great post!

Professional Test (Just for Fun!)

I found this and thought it was kinda neat, interesting, funny, ect. So I decided to post it. Enjoy! Oh! and don't be afraid. This quiz won't have you pressing your nose against the screen!

The following short quiz consists of 4 questions and tells whether you are qualified to be a "professional". Scroll down for the answers after you have thought about it. The questions are not that difficult.

1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator ?

Wrong Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant and close the refrigerator.

Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your actions.

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference, all the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend?

Correct Answer: The Elephant. The Elephant is in the refrigerator. This tests your memory.

OK, even if you did not answer the first three questions, correctly you still have one more chance to show your abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross. But it is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you manage it?

Correct Answer: You swim across. All the crocodiles are attending the animal meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

There For Us. Always!

School is getting really tough. A close friend moves away. A family member or close friend becomes seriously ill or dies.

We all go through hard times. And sometimes it seems that we have to go through it alone. We feel that there is no one who we can run to for help or comfort. So we try and bear it all by ourselves. We forget that there is someone who is always there for us.

Jesus is always ready to help us, we just need to ask for His help. He said “Ask and it will be given to you….” (Luke 11:9) And I have found that to be true. So many times I’ve needed help with something, and He has always been faithful to help me if I ask Him for His help. He has always been there for me. And He is there for you too.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

Hannah? Which one?

Okay.........there are so many Hannahs out there in the blog world, it is hard to distinguish between us. So, in order to help, I have decided to add my middle name to my first name. I got the idea from Hannah Beth from Sold Out and Beauty from the Heart (thanks Hannah Beth!). My middle name is Elizabeth, so my name in the blog world is now Hannah Elizabeth (spelled with a z not a s).

Made in His Image

Sorry guys! This post is more for the girls. But don't run away! You are welcome to read it too.

Everywhere we turn the world is shouting at us, “You have to be thin, tall, tan, have a flawless complexion, perfect, white teeth, etc. And if you aren’t that way, do anything you have to in order to become that way.” It is very sad how much focus and praise is put on outward beauty instead of inward beauty.

Girls become anorexic and bulimic so that they will become thin, expose themselves to harmful light rays that can cause cancer in order to become tan, undergo plastic surgery to change some aspect of their body’s appearance, etc.

Why do girls go through all this?

Because the world lies to us and says that the only way to be happy and accepted is to be what the world defines as beautiful (whatever that is!). That is why girls are willing to harm themselves in order to attain that “perfect body.”

Maybe you haven’t gone to the extreme of harming yourself but have you ever complained about the way you look or wished you could change something in your appearance? Probably most girls at one time or the other have.

There is something we are all forgetting. What is it?

We are forgetting that God made us. He made us in His image. He made us the way He wanted to make us. In His eyes we are beautiful just the way we are!

But there is something else we must remember and realize. To God, outward appearance is not what matters. He looks at our heart. To Him, inward beauty is worth far more that outward beauty because outward beauty fades. Smooth skin is traded for wrinkles. Blonde hair is traded for gray. But Inward beauty lasts. Instead of fading with time, it becomes more beautiful with time.

Does this mean that we shouldn’t focus any time or attention at all to our outward appearance? No it doesn’t.

Nowhere in the Bible are women instructed to wish for, ask for, or strive for physical beauty. Neither does the Bible portray physical beauty as a blessing for those who have it.

This is why, in 1 Peter 3:3, we are exhorted: “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair, the wearing of gold, or the putting on of clothing.” Now God is not saying that women shouldn’t style their hair or wear jewelry, for then He would also be barring clothing—and we know that is not the case.

However, what the 1 Peter verse is forbidding, says Matthew Henry, is the “inordinate love and excessive use (that is, the abuse) of them.” He goes on to say, “we must not set our hearts upon them, nor value ourselves by them, nor think the better of ourselves for them, nor pride ourselves in them, as if they added any real excellence to us.”

From Girl Talk by Carolyn Mahaney & Nicole Mahaney Whitacre page:133 (Check our their blog!)

We need to find a balance between focusing on our outward beauty and focusing on our inward beauty, and not swing from one extreme to the other. Here is a quiz from SHE by Rebecca St. James and Lynda Hunter Bjorklund that may help you see how you are doing in this area. If you have to time, read through it and answer the questions.

Take this quiz to check out your beauty pulse internally, externally, and holistically:

Quick Beauty Quiz

Answer yes or no to each of the following questions:

1. Do you feel comfortable enough in your own skin to be around close family and friends without always having to wear makeup?

2. Do you often feel pretty?

3. Can you eat a dessert without feeling any guilt?

4. Can you see an attractive girl or woman and not feel jealous or compare yourself to her?

5. Do you feel that you are doing a good job of balancing your focus on both inner and outer beauty?

6. Have you avoided laxative abuse and regularly skipping meals to lose weight?

7. Are you purge-free?

8. Can you view slim, seemingly flawless women on TV and in magazines without feeling an overwhelming sense of disappointment in yourself?

9. Would you say that for the most part you have a positive, healthy self-image?

10. Do you feel that you have a good understanding of holistic beauty?

Scoring: Count the number of “yes” responses that you made.

10 Wonderful! Your self-image and sense of holistic beauty in God is excellent.

7-9 You are doing quite well at keeping your beauty perspective balanced. This chapter will be a good reminder and challenge for you.

4-6 Your excessive outer-appearance focus is definitely crippling your inner growth and beauty. Give serious attention to this chapter and talk to a Christian mentor about how you can apply its truths.

0-3 Sister, we’ve gotta chat. You need healing in this area of your life. You’re due for some heart-to-heart time with a godly older woman who can help you accept yourself for how God made you.

Okay.....What Next?

Yesterday, the sky was blue and there were fluffy white clouds.......ahhhh! Spring is just around the corner!

Then guess what?

It started snowing! And I’m not talking about little itty bitty snow flakes, these were pretty large snow flakes. Then all of a sudden it was beautiful outside again! The sun was shining and the sky was blue! [The weather continued to be crazy for awhile even after this!]

Can you imagine what it would be like if God changed like the weather? One minute He loves us and the next minute He doesn’t. One minute He is with us helping us and the next minute He’s gone and has left us by ourselves. Can you imagine how terrible that would be? We would be in constant fear that He would suddenly decide He didn’t love us and would decide He didn’t want to save us anymore. How could we ever feel safe? How could we ever be happy? We would always be afraid.

But thankfully God doesn’t change like the weather. He doesn’t change. He says that He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! God loves us, God saves us, God forgives us, God helps us, God is faithful to us. So since He never changes, He will always be that way! How comforting it is when we realize He will never stop loving us, He will never leave us, He will never change!

Regenerate Our Culture

Today I went over and visited Spunky Jr's blog. And in her post, she introduced Regenerate Our Culture. An organization who's goal is to bring our nation back to a biblical worldview. Something that is so desparetly needed.

Who's behind Regenerate Our Culture? Some really great bloggers! Kristin Braun (Spunky Jr.), Tim Sweetman (Agent Tim), Jake Smith (Mission 3:6teen), and Alex King (Smart Homeschool).

Be sure to visit Regenerate Our Culture to find out how you can get involved too!

From One Nation Under God to One Nation Without God

United States of America.

When you think of this country, what is one word that you think of?

FREEDOM.

Freedom of speech, of press, to vote, to own property, of worship, etc. We take these things for granted, but many people do not have these freedoms that we have.

Our country has been blessed.

In Search of Freedom

Why did the pilgrims come to America? Why did they risk their lives traveling across the ocean? Why did they leave all that was familiar to them to go to a strange land?

Why?

Because where they were living, they did not have freedom.

Why did our forefathers risk their lives signing the Declaration of Independence. Why were they willing to give up their lives fighting for this country? Because they wanted freedom.

They were tired of being oppressed by those in higher power. But instead of just complaining about it, they decided to do something to change it. That’s why the pilgrims crossed the ocean and why those men signed the Declaration of Independence.

The Foundation of Freedom.

Our country’s foundation is God. It was built upon His principles and His law.

To have freedom you have to have laws.

Many people today are beginning to look at Christianity as an impediment to the continuation of their “freedom”—to sin. But they have transformed liberty into license, and in the worst form of licentiousness, they don’t want anybody speaking against that or in any way restraining them. Hence, the modern hedonist views Christianity as repressive and not liberating.

Setting out to set themselves free—to fulfill all of their lusts—the hedonists find themselves ultimately in bondage to tyranny. As Edmund Burke said, “There must be some restraining influence upon the wills and passions of men, and the less there is from within, the more there must be from without.

What If Jesus Had Never Been Born by D. James Kennedy, chapter 6, page 89

Our foundation: It’s being removed piece by piece

Our country is trying to push God out. Out of our lives, out of the schools, out of the government, and out of our country.

If they succeed in removing the foundation of our country, who is God, it will collapse, just like a building without its foundation.

Alexis de Tocqueville, a Frenchman who traveled throughout America in 1830, was astonished to see that though the American people were quite religious, they were also most free. He wrote: “The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.” And in another passage, he observed:

There is no country in the whole world in which the Christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America and there can be no greater proof of its utility, and of its conformity to human nature, than that its influence is most powerfully felt over the most enlightened and free nation on earth.

What If Jesus Had Never Been Born by D. James Kennedy, chapter 6, pages 87-88

What’s happened? Why are the “notions of Christianity and of liberty” no longer “intimately combined in our minds?” Listen to what Abe Lincoln said:

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God.

We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.

We have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.

American Government by William R. Bowen, George T. Thompson, Michael R. Lowman, and George C. Cochran, chapter 6, page 100

This country was built upon God as the foundation, upon His Word. But now that we have prospered, we say we don’t need God, we do not see the need for God. We have forgotten that He is the One who helped us to prosper. We have forgotten that He is the One who gave us freedom. So now we are removing our foundation piece by piece. The firm base of our freedom is crumbling.

Retaining Freedom

If we want to keep our freedom, then we need to keep God in the US. He wants us to have freedom because He is the One who gives us freedom. In His Word it tells how he liberated the Israelites from their enemies. And also it tells how he liberated all of us, the whole world, from our greatest enemy, Satan. So clearly He wants us to have freedom. He is our Great Liberator. Not oppressor.

To close I’ll let you read what some of our Presidents have said about God’s Word the Bible.

That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests.

-Andrew Jackson

Hold fast to the Bible as the sheet anchor of your liberties. Write its precepts in your hearts, and practice them in your lives. To the influence of this Book are we indebted for all the progress made in true civilization, and to this we must look as our guide in the future. “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”

-Ulysses S. Grant

The more profoundly we study this wonderful book, and the more closely we observe its divine precepts, the better citizens we will become and the higher will be our destiny as a nation.

-William McKinley

Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally—I do not mean figuratively, but literally—impossible for us to figure what that loss would be if these teachings were removed. We would lose almost all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals; all the standards towards which we, with more or less resolution, strive to raise ourselves.

-Theodore Roosevelt

There is no other book so varied as the Bible, nor one so full of concentrated wisdom. Whether it be of law, business, morals, or that vision which leads the imagination in the creation of constructive enterprise for the happiness of mankind, he who seeks for guidance in any of these things may look inside its covers and find illumination. The study of this Book in your Bible classes is a post-graduate course in the richest library of human experience. As a nation we are indebted to the Book of books for our national ideas and representative institutions. Their preservation rests in
adhearing to its principles.

Different Things

What's going on with me:

Well, I'm really busy with school. I've had to step up the pace with it in order to get done on time.

Besides that, there isn't anything so exciting to tell, and that wasn't all that exciting either!

If you'd like some good reading here are a few recommendations...

Books I'm reading right now:

SHE by Rebecca St. James and Lynda Hunter Bjorklund

This book is for a range of ages. Rebecca writes from a younger perspective and Lynda writes from an older perspective. It is a really good book!

The Professor by Charlotte Bronte (and we just ordered Shirley!)

So far it has been excellant. It is especially interesting for me because the main character, William Crimsworth, goes to live in Brussels, Belgium.

(Thanks again Jacqui for recommending Shirley!)

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I've read it before but it has been awhile so I have forgotten alot of it. It is also really good.

Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis has such a way of explaining things! It has been a great book.

Girl Talk by Carolyn Mahaney and Nicole Mahaney Whitacre

Just started on this one. So far it has been great. (And I have always loved reading their blog!)

In Need of Prayer:

This little girl is in need of all our prayers.
The doctors discovered that Candace has "gram positive cocci infection" originating on the bone and spread throughout the soft tissue in her body.

Candace is only 7 years old. And she has had to have 12 surgeries in 15 days.

Favorite Books of the Bible

My favorite books of the Bible (I can't choose just one!) would be Genesis, the four Gospels, and Revelation.

Genesis because: It tells Who created the world and how we got here. And also because it has some of the really familiar Bible stories in it. Like Adam and Eve, Noah's ark, Joseph's coat of many colors, etc.

The Four Gospels because: of Jesus! The four Gospels tell the life of Jesus and also they tell us how and why we can be saved!

Revelation because: it gives us hope that this world will not remain this way forever. And because it tells us what heaven is like!

What are your favorite books of the Bible and why? (I know I have a poll on the sidebar asking this question, but the space is limited and so I can't list many of the books. )

Trusting God

God is love: I think we have to realize this before we can completely trust Him.

Sometimes we think we know what is best for us. And we are afraid to let God take complete control of our lives because we are afraid of what He might do. We are afraid the He might close the door when we want to go through it. But if He closes the door, He does it for our own good.

How do I know this?

Because He loves us. He would never do anything to hurt us because He loves us.

Take for example a child who is running towards the street. To them it looks like a fun place to play because they don’t realize they could get hit by a car. But the mother of the child know the danger, realizes that her child might get hurt. So the mother quickly goes and prevents her child from getting in the street. She did this because she loves her child. She didn’t do this to spoil her child’s fun, but she did it to protect it from harm.

Sometimes we are like that little child running towards the street. We are oblivious to the danger we are heading into. But God, like the mother, sees the danger and He protects us from that danger because He doesn’t want us to get hurt. Because He loves us!

Think about this: God, who created the universe, the stars, the sky, and the sea, He loves us and cares enough to take interest in our everyday lives. The One who is King of kings and Lord of lords loves you and loves me!

When we realize God’s amazing love for us, then it is not so hard to trust Him. Because we know that He will do what He know is best for us. We can only think we know the right thing for us. God knows the right thing for us.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Agnes Grey

I just finished reading Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte! It was really good. It is not as long as Jane Eyre or Villette, but it was definitely worth the read! (I won't tell you what happens at the end in case you haven't read it.)

Now I've started reading The Professor by Charlotte Bronte. So far it has also been good. (Don't tell me what happens!)

Have a great weekend! "See" you next week!

The Olympics!

Okay, I’m normally not a sports fan. But because it is the Olympics, I’ve made an exception.

So many great athletes from all over the world come together and compete against one another.

The best of the best is determined.

But with these athletes, what impresses me is not always their ability but their humility. When a great athlete says, “I’m the best!” “I’ve got to win!” I am no longer so impressed with their ability and to me they are not so great anymore. But when a great athlete shows humility, I become more impressed with their ability.

It is the same with other things. Someone may excel in a certain area, but if they show no humility, it overshadows their ability.

We need to examine our own life and see if there are areas in which we struggle with pride. Humility is not always easy. Sometimes it is really hard to do! It is something that has to be worked at. Of course we will trip and make mistakes (we are not perfect!), but we shouldn’t let that stop us from getting up and trying again.

9 A.M.!

When I was around 6-8 years old, I was afraid of getting locked in places. Because I got locked (more like stuck) in an elevator and the lights shut off and I got locked in a bathroom. (But both times I got out quickly. But the memory of it didn't go away very quickly.)

Here is a joke that sounds similar to my experiences (similar in the way that I wanted out!!)

"What time does the library open?" the man on the phone asked.

"Nine A.M." came the reply. "And what's the idea of calling me at home in the middle of the night to ask a question like that?"

"Not until nine A.M.?" the man asked in a disappointed voice.

"No, not till nine A.M.!" the librarian said. "Why do you want to get in before nine A.M.?"

"Who said I wanted to get in?" the man sighed sadly. "I want to get out."

Are you ready?

One day Jesus is coming back. But when He will return, is unknown to us. God is the only one who knows the day, hour, and second. He could come back today, tomorrow, next week, next year, or in 100 years. We have no idea when that time will be. It is a mystery to us. But one day, this mystery will be unveiled for all eyes to see. Are you ready for this unveiling?

God is going to invade, all right: but what is the good of saying you are on His
side then, when you see the whole natural universe melting away like a dream and something else—something it never entered your head to conceive—comes crashing in; something so beautiful to some of us and so terrible to others that none of us will have any choice left? For this time it will be God without disguise; something so overwhelming that it will strike either irresistible love or irresistible horror into every creature. It will be too late then to choose your side. There is no use saying you choose to lie down when it has become impossible to stand up. That will not be the time for choosing: it will be the time when we discover which side we really have chosen, whether we realised it before or not. Now, today, this moment, is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It will not last for ever. We must take it or leave it.

(Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis: page 65)

Anthony Evans has a song called I Choose Now. The chorus goes:

I choose now
To be humbled in your presence
I choose now
To fall on my face
Cause one day
Every knee will bow but Jesus
I choose now.

Have you chosen now?

How Could It Have Just Happened? (continued)

A continuation of yesterday’s post.

(3) It is undeniable that change and development within various species of living things occur. For example, some varieties of species are becoming extinct; on the other hand, we occasionally see new strains forming within a species. But there is no evidence, not even in the geologic record, which supports the theory that one “kind” of living thing ever evolved from another “kind.” Rather, existing evidence supports the Bible’s declaration that God created each living creature “after his kind” (Gen 1:21, 24-25).
(4) Bible-believing Christians must also reject the theory called theistic evolution. This theory adopts most of the conclusions of naturalistic evolution, adding only that God started the evolutionary process. Such a theory denies the Biblical revelation that ascribes to God an active role in all aspects of creation. For example, every main verb in Gen. 1 has God as its subject, except for Gen. 1:12 (which fulfills the command of God in v. 11) and the recurring phrase “there was evening and there was morning.” God is not a passive supervisor of an evolutionary process; rather, He is the active Creator of all things (cf. Col. 1:16).

I am doing Dr. Jay Wile’s chemistry course. Read what he said at the end of one of the modules (chapters) in the book.

As I have pointed out before, there are many such incredible “coincidences” in nature. There are so many that I find it impossible for anyone who really understands physics or chemistry to believe that all this we are studying just came about by chance! The universe is too perfectly designed for that. From the smallest atom to the largest galaxy, incredible design features abound in our universe. These design features are the fingerprints of God, making all who objectively study the universe aware of His existence.

How Could It Have Just Happened?

What if I were to tell you that the car in this picture just happened, that all of a sudden there was a bang and then this car appeared? You would think I was crazy. I would think I was crazy! This car was designed and created by someone.

Well, what about this flower? Do you think it was also designed and created by someone? Or do you think it just happened?

Listen to this…

CREATION AND EVOLUTION. Evolution is the predominant view regarding the origin of life and the universe proposed in the scientific and educational community of the contemporary world. Bible-believing Christians should consider these four observations about evlolution.

(1) Evolution is a naturalistic effort to account for the origin and development of the universe. This view begins with the assumption that there is no personal, divine Creator who made and fashioned the world; rather, everything came into existence by a series of chance happenings that occurred over billions of years. Proponents of evolution claim to have scientific data that support their hypothesis.

(2) The teaching of evolution is not truly scientific. According to the scientific method, all conclusions must be based on indisputable evidence gathered from experiments that can be duplicated in any laboratory. However, no experiments have been or can be devised to test and substantiate theories about the origin of matter from some supposed “big bang” beginning or about the gradual development of living beings from their simplest to their most complex form. Consequently, evolution is a hypothesis without scientific “evidence”; therefore, to accept it one must have faith in a human theory. The faith of God’s people, in contrast, is in the Lord and in His inspired revelation, which states that He is the one who made all things out of nothing (Heb. 11:3)

A Simple Thanks

Rebecca St. James has a song called "Thank You" on her new album. I love it because its message is so simple but also very important.

Thanking God.

How many times does God do something for us and we forget to tell Him a simple thank you? When you think about your home, family, food, clothes, friends, and church, do you forget who gave you those things? Do you forget about the One who gave you life, the One who breathed life into you?

Thanking God should be something we do everyday. Because everyday He blesses us. You may be thinking, “Yeah right! Today was the most awful day I’ve ever had! I was late for an appointment, the dog chewed up my favorite pair of shoes, I got a D on my math test, and I lost my purse/wallet!” But He has blessed you because He has given you another day to live! How do I know this? Well, you are reading this post aren’t you?!

Sanctity of Life

Abortion and euthanasia.

I think we kinda become conditioned to hearing these things. We hear about them so much. We stop realizing how terrible they are. But when you do stop and really think about it, the thought is scary. We live in a time when it is a common thing to kill babies and it is common to kill those who are said to be better off dead. The elderly, handicapped, and babies are in danger.

Think about it: One day you and I will be one of the elderly, and some of us may be handicapped. We have survived abortion, but will we survive euthanasia. Someday will someone think us better off dead and decide to end our life early?

In modern times, we have drifted from a sanctity of life ethic to a quality of life ethic. The concept of sanctity of life is a spiritual concept; it is a religious concept. The word sanctity—which comes from the Latin word sanctitas from sanctus—means “holy or sacred unto God, inviolable, that which God has declared is of great value.” It is, therefore, a spiritual concept.

However, for a humanist or an atheist or an unbeliever of most any kind, there is no such thing as sanctity of life. Unless there is a God who has given us a spirit and who sanctifies us, there cannot be a sanctity-of-life ethic.

With such a low view of man as that introduced in the last century, should it surprise us that man has killed more of his own during the twentieth century than in all the other centuries combined? As the saying goes, “Ideas control the world.” Only by the resurgence of modern paganism, in a post-Christian culture, do we find the Nazi concentration camp, the Soviet gulag, the American abortion chamber.

Quality of life is a physical concept. No one can look at another and determine the quality of that person’s soul. If life is merely molecules in motion, then we can have a quality-of-life ethic. But if we are Christians and believe that here is an infinite, eternal, and unchangeable God who is Spirit, who has given us an eternal soul; and if we have an inalienable right to life, we cannot buy that kin of an ethic.

When Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun wrote Roe v. Wade he appealed to religion. However, he said, “If I were to appeal to religion, I would appeal to the religions of Rome and Greece”—which, of course, practiced and encouraged abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, suicide, and all the rest, including the Colosseum! He would appeal to pagan religion for support of Roe v. Wade! We are reverting, in the Western word, to heathen paganism, and most people don’t even know that it is happening!

Pro-Life

I now have a pro-life section in my links. One of the links has been on my sidebar, but there are some new links. And I have also added an abortion counter to my sidebar. On the website where I got it, this is what it said about the counter.

Due to the use of averages, and statistics estimated in part, the number itself is obviously not perfectly accurate, but is pretty close. There is some evidence also that the rate of induced abortions has dropped slightly in the U.S. since 1999, however, the U.S. (according to the same report) accounts for less than 5% of worldwide abortions (and therefore less than 23% of abortions in developed nations), and so the difference would be minimal to an already approximated number. There could be more abortions, there could be less. But basically, the counter is sadly roughly accurate.

Note: On the links with “not recommended for ages under 12” it’s not that they are bad websites, on the contrary those sites are excellent. It is just that there are pictures of the aborted babies and also there is a video of an ultrasound that shows an abortion from the victim’s position.

Why Four Gospels?

I found this very interesting.

We encounter this man, Jesus Christ, through four separate portraits—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Many have asked, “Why is it necessary to have four Gospels instead of just one? Why couldn’t one of these writers have gotten all the facts together and presented them for us in one book?” Well, that would be like trying to use one photograph of a building to adequately represent the entire structure. One picture could not possibly show all four sides of the building at once.

The same is true of Jesus. His life, His character, and His ministry are so rich and multifaceted that a single view could not tell the whole story. God deliberately planned for four Gospels so that each could present our Lord in a unique way. Each Gospel presents a distinct aspect of Christ, and our understanding of who He truly is would be incalculably poorer if even one of these Gospels was lost to us.

The Old Testament is filled with pictures of the coming Messiah, and these pictures correspond with the portraits of Jesus, “painted” for us in the four Gospels. First, He is pictured in many prophecies—particularly those of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Zechariah—as the coming King of Isreal…

Second, Jesus the Messiah was portrayed in many parts of the Old Testament as the servant, the suffering one…

Third, we have frequent Old Testament picture of Christ’s coming as a man…

Finally, we have those Old Testament pictures that speak of the Messiah as God, as the Everlasting One…

So all the Old Testament prophecies and pictures of Christ can be placed under these four Gospel headings: king, servant, human being, and God…

In Matthew, the Gospel of the King, we see many evidences of his kingship: The book opens with Christ’s genealogy, tracing His royal line back to David, king of Israel, and to Abraham, father of the nation Israel…

Mark, the second Gospel, pictures Christ as the Servant, and as you would expect, Mark does not provide any genealogy for Christ. After all, who cares about the genealogy of a servant? Nobody. In Mark’s Gospel, our Lord simply appears on the scene…

Luke show us Christ as human. Here we see the perfection of His manhood—the glory, beauty, strength, and dignity of His humanity. As we would expect, Luke also contains a genealogy of Christ. If Jesus is to be presented as human, we want to know that He belongs to the human race…

John’s Gospel presents Christ as God. From the very first verse, this is John’s potent, unmistakable theme. Many people fail to realize that John’s Gospel, like Matthew’s and Luke’s, opens with a genealogy. The reason so many people miss the genealogy in John is that it is so short:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (1:1).

That’s it! That’s John’s entire genealogy of Christ—two people, the Father and Son.

British Literature

I love British literature! Below is a list of some of the books that I’ve read.

By Jane Austen

Northenger Abbey: I think it is one of Jane Austen’s earlier novels. It was very good. I’m not sure if there is a movie for this one. It would make a good movie though!

Sense and Sensibility: Was also very good. It also had some interesting turns. Especially with Mr. Willoughby. It was a little sad at the end though. The movie for this one is very good. I think it was made in 1995, not sure though.

Pride and Prejudice: One of my favorite books (I’ve said that before haven’t I?). Early in the book you can kinda figure out how it will end, but are not sure how it will happen. It does have some surprises though! The movie is also excellent (the one made in 1995 with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy). I also saw the new one that just came out, it was okay but I like the other one better.

Mansfield Park: Fanny Price is shy but sweet-tempered and is sometimes just brushed aside and forgotten about. But it has a happy ending for her. In this book, you can also guess what will happen at the end, but sometimes it seems that you will be proven wrong.

Emma: In this book the star character, Emma, is very wealthy. And her personality is different from the key character in the other Jane Austen books.

Persuasion: Sad at first, but turns out well. You run into some interesting people in this book. They also have a movie for this one.

By Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre: Really surprising! I won’t tell you what is surprising in case you haven’t read the book. But if you like books with surprising and interesting turns, you would probably like it.

Villette: I’m not finished reading it yet, but so far it has been excellent! Just like in Jane Eyre, it also has some surprises. I feel so sorry for Lucy Snow! I can’t tell you whether it ends happily or not because, like I said, I haven’t finished it yet. (If you’ve read it, please don’t tell me how it ends!)

By Emily Bronte:

Wuthering Heights: The people in this book are very odd. And there is a lot of sad things in the book, but two of the people have a happy ending.

Bible Verse (Isaiah 45:18-19)

For this is what the Lord says—he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—he says: “I am the Lord, and there is no other. I have not spoken in secret, from somewhere in a land of darkness; I have not said to Jacob’s descendants, ‘Seek me in vain.’ I, the Lord, speak the truth; I declare what is right.”

Isaiah 45:18-19

Me Interviewed by...Me!

This is an exclusive interview with Hannah-Liz (me) from All For Him
I have added to it, and I've also posted a photo of me.

So, how old are you?
I am 16.

Hey! So am I! Sorry, back to the questions.

So you are in high school? What school do you go to?
Yes, I’m in my junior year. And I am homeschooled.

Homeschooled! What about socialization?
*sigh* I get plenty of socialization. I talk to people and am around people all the time!

How long have you been homeschooled?
Ever since I started school. I’ve never been to public school.

Interesting.

How long have you been a Christian?
I’ve been a Christian since I was about 4.

When did you move to Belgium?
We moved here in 1996.

So you’ve not been back to the US in 10 years?!
No! No! We’ve been back several times.

Oh, okay. . .

What do you want to do when you get older? Do you want to go to college?
Yes, I want to be a pharmacist.

A pharmacist? That is a little boring.
Well, to me it is not that boring. I've always been very interested in the medical field.

Well why don't you become a doctor or a nurse?
I don't want to be a doctor or a nurse.

Okay...

What is your favorite book, besides the Bible.
I guess it would have to be Pride and Prejudice.

Oh, I love that book! I think my favorite is Villette.

But how can you...you are me...

What?

Oh, never mind!

Please, let me do the talking! You are getting me confused!

But...

Shhhhh!

Who is your favorite Christian artist?
Rebecca St. James.

I like her too.

What do you like to do for fun?
Play the piano.

Can you please answer in longer sentences? I'm not going to have much to write down.

How long have you played the piano?
Well, I started learning the notes when I was 5 and kinda played around with it for a few years. But I’ve had good lessons for about 4 ½ years. My piano teacher is British.

Now your answer is too long!

It is not!

Just go back to the short answers!

You have a dog, right?
Yes. His name is Buster.

What kind of dog is he?
He is a Yorkshire Terrier.

Now lets talk about your blog a little bit.

Did you ever think you would start a blog?
No.

Really.

In your profile, I noticed that you were asked to describe how you would escape if you were trapped in a well with a goat and a slinky. You said, “Call for help on a cell phone.” But what would you do if you did not have a cell phone with you?
I would just yell for help.

What about the goat and the slinky, what would you do about them?
I would be trying the talk the goat into not hurting me and for something to do until help arrived, I would play with the slinky.

But what if no one heard you yelling for help? Being in a well is not a comfortable situation!
Why are you asking me this? I’m not even trapped in a well, and hopefully I never will be.

Okay, no more on that.

One last question.

Do you enjoy working on this blog, or are you bored with it?
No, I’m not bored with it. I like working on it. It has really helped me to learn more about computers and has helped me with my writing.

How has it helped you?

You said "last question."

Oh, okay!

Thank you for your time.
You’re welcome.

This is a picture of me.

It's amazing what you can do with Coral Photo House! I could have made it look like a puzzle, a drawing, etc. But I decided to make the photo black and white and blurred.
